I taught yoga this morning and decided that today’s practice would be based on “cause & effect”. Deepak Chopra describes it this way, “every action generates a force of energy that returns to you in kind.”
Action includes physical movements, but also includes our thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings generate energy that comes back to us. In fact, it is only through our thoughts and feelings that action is created at all. So, you could say that it is the thoughts and feelings that are the true generator of the force of energy in cause and effect.
We often think, feel and move without much consideration for what is going on below the surface of the intended outcome. Today I wanted to see if we could perceive the more subtle causes and effects of the postures we were in. We took time to be in the pose as it is “normally” practiced and then we stayed longer to create awareness about what else was happening and why. We spent time scanning from head to toe developing an awareness of the effects of the experience.
It’s a unique experience and akin to becoming aware of our thoughts and feelings. When we ask questions to determine why we behave a certain way, why we’re feeling the way we do and what the thoughts are that started the ball rolling, the subtleties show up and create profound transformation.
When we don’t take the time to consider the cause and effect of the things we do, think or feel beyond the immediate experience, the depth of our understanding is limited. Here’s a basic example of a limited awareness of cause and effect:
We eat. We don’t pay attention to what we’re eating or how much. We feel physically full, but not always satisfied.
However, when we go deeper into the experience, deep into the thoughts and deep into the feelings, we are brought into a more fulfilling life experience. When we fully participate in the event with conscious awareness, the example above might looks like this instead:
We eat. We choose what we’re eating, why and how much. We feel nourished. We notice how each food effects our bodies and how it feels (physically & emotionally). We are aware of what we are eating and how much. We feel satisfied. We feel enjoyment in the experience.
As we decide to experience the cause and effect of our situation more consciously and look at our thoughts and feelings, we learn that we have the power to create our results intentionally. As we use our thoughts and feelings deliberately, we our are able to create the results and ultimately the life that we want.
